Default CV/Axle assembly issue - help?

97 A41.8Q: Both of my outer CV boots were cracked and I had a bad tie rod end on the passengers side. I installed both new tie rod ends and got the right CV joint back on without much effort. I assembled the drivers side CV joint and had a much more difficult time getting the CV joint back on to the keyed axle. As I was tightening the wheel bearing center bolt to seat it I noticed that the axle was rotating but the mount at the engine end wasn't. I obviously unseated the inside keyed shaft? What to do?

Default I checked

the CV joint by removing it and it's still attached to the axle. I can turn the axle by hand which I can't do with the other side. I also hear a slight clicking on the engine side of the axle inside the covered joint while I hand turn it....????
