Default CV Boot replacement information (and Andy_TN, YGM)

I replaced my CV boot this weekend and ran into some issues that I
think should be available for everyone's information.

FYI, my car is a 1996 Audi A4 FWD manual.....
My CV boot kit was purchased at germanautoparts.com....

-The collar bolt on the car, AND included in the kit, are both 27mm
hex heads.....no allen head on either one, and they are not 23mm like the ones mentioned in Andy's writeup.

-The triple square bolts on my car are 10mm, not 8mm like the ones mentioned in Andy's writeup

-I did not have to unplug the ABS sensor for anything...the wheel
assembly was in the correct position for joint removal and the ABS
sensor and cable was not in the way.

-The ***** in the joint can and will come out if you move the joint in
a certain way (as if the car were going around an unrealistically
sharp corner)...I learned this shortly before diving under the car to
chase one from my joint. For the sake of a thorough cleaning, I
carefully removed all of the ***** before cleaning, after recovering
the one destined to roll underneath the car.

-IMO the best method to clean the joint is to have some sort of
solvent and a small bucket (we used a 2 liter coke bottle, cut in
1/2), to fully submerge the joint into. I think air would just make a
huge mess, and spraying w/ solvent didn't move the heavier spots of
grease. We submerged, swished around, removed from solution, wiped
down. Repeat that process 4 times or so. Then I wiped the joint down
as well as I could w/ a clean rag, and let the joint sit in front of a
space heater w/ fan for 20 minutes.

-before putting the ***** back in, put a little grease in the
joint...otherwise you'll feel the joint seize a little bit when you
are moving it around to put the ***** back in.

-when putting the ***** back in, be careful not to allow the center
pieces of the joint to move too far from their operational
position...otherwise it will seize, you'll have to get a punch and
hammer involved to get it loose again. Here again, I learned this the
hard way.

-Get the special tool to pinch the clamps down....our "be creative"
approach led us to a broken clamp after a few attempts to get the
clamp tightened down. Fortunately, we had a standard screw hose-clamp
on hand....and fortunately, it fit and worked.

These issues are minor if you expect and prepare for them

Andy's writeup in the tech section

Default Nice work Matt!!!

CV boot is pretty easy once you have done it once... Hardest part I ran into was getting the joint off of the axle.. Did you guys hammer yours off the axle?

Default so Matt are you volunteering to help me with mine? DCModSquad day...since

I've got to do my TREs as well. I may definitely hit you up for the triple squares 8 & 10 to cover all bets.

Default Thanks man

what a DIRTY job this one is...dishwashing gloves were clutch!

Once I got the shaft clamped into the vice, I did something similar to what Andy and Dave did in the writeup, but to get it started, I needed more power than I could transfer w/ the punch, so I took the thickest rag I could find, draped it over the post exposed point of the "star", and gave it a few careful yet solid hits...that got it started, so I implimented the punch as seen in the write up.
