boot? are there signs or symptoms of a busted cv joint? right now theres just black crud everywhere. Probably driven couple hundred miles with the torn boot, and will have to go a few more before i can get the replacement boot.

Default Depends on your wallet!

CV joints aren't cheap, but once the boot is torn, the joint's integrity has been violated. In order to replace the boot, you will need to remove the CV joint ANYWAY and soak it in solvent to get rid of the compromised grease and dirt particles or else its life will be greatly reduced.
What I'm saying is that it's the same amount of work + cleaning to replace "just the boot" and there is no guarantee how long the joint will last after that. If your pockets are deep enough, bite the bullet and buy a new joint. If not, you may be doubling your effort/time if the joint goes anytime soon. Good luck.

Default Not really!

Depending on how your boot split, you can TRY to continually pull out old grease and pack new grease in, once a week or so... but I think it's more work than it's worth and will produce minimal results.
