Dangerous situation

My 97 A4 1.8T (automatic) did something very dangerous the other day. When my wife pressed the accelerator to cross an intersection there was no response to the accelerator pedal what so ever. The car moved at about 5 MPH across the intersection with the engine at idle. Shortly after that the engine responded and the car started working normally. I have had this car for a few months and this is the first time this happens. I have not been able to reproduce it since.
I looked for information related to this in the forum and found one message with a description of this problem, but no information regarding the possible cause.
Any ideas?

Not sure how your car responds (since mine is DBW is and yours is not), but in my car it feels just like that if you are in too high a gear.
I wonder if perhaps your tranny is not upshifting properly, and got locked in too high a gear?
Just a thought.

In the cars which were claimed to have spontaneus acceleration, the brake and gas pedals were close to promote heel-toe. Idiots were stepping on the wrong pedal.
