or do some of the audi's on this board seem a bit too much with the external mods?
disclaimer: to each his/her own, and i respect the effort that goes into each and every one of these modded a4's. but...
i look at at lot of these lowered, 18", shiny wheeled, clear-cornered (looks okay on silver a4's), ringless, debadged, limousine-tinted cars, and it just looks pimped up to me. chip it, exhaust it, absolutely!
the a4 is a classic design, elegant and fast, and it seems that to pimp it up is missing the point of what makes this car so special. the a4 is a car that doesn't have to compensate for a small ***** by shouting out with machismo, look at me!
believe it or not, with all due respect,

every upgrade/change that somebody does to their car is done because there is some type of car enthusiasm. I wonder about people that spend $30K plus on a car that looks like hundreds of others and drive it like that for 4-5 years. We want our car to be/look different. And I agree that some of the stuff people do their cars is at best questionable, and also that to each, his/her own; it's a matter of opinion. I for one would not be caught dead on a car with gold badges for example, but some people at least take the time to have it done. Pimpy, maybe, but that deserves some kind of respect (not much, though, IMO) for the thought at least. Just trying to show another point of view.<p>Edward A

Some of us don't quite have money to spend on the mods we'd like. If I had some extra cash, I'd like to get some lower profile tires/wheel combo to make the car look better, and some suspension treatment to make it handle better.
Other than that, my car is stock besides tint and DIY hands-free phone kit integration. But I'm no less enthusiastic about my car than the next guy who has a bunch of mods. More fiscally-challenged, yes, but not less enthused.
)
BTW, my A4 definitely brings it out of me. When I was putting around in an Escort, I really didn't care much about it.

Most of the mods are functional in nature. The only mods here which are purely cosmetic are the debadging, the new grills, etc (maybe the folks who go with 18's as well, but if you live in a nice weather area with good roads, why not. Also note that chrome wheels, once the realm of the tastless, are now present on many, many cars, including German and Italians, its become very mainstream) Very few of the mods that are popular here are to make the car "flashier." For instance, clear corners certainly don't make the car flashy, they would actually make the car less colorful to the average person.
Tinting is really a necessity in many parts of the country. I have the Onyx leatherette interior, and after my first summer with my car here, im seriously considering a 50% or so tint on my car. It does get hot!
I think the distinction is this. Ricers/pimps want people to look at their cars and think: "wow, look at that! How much did that baby cost?" They will sacrifice function for looks. They wear all their money on their cars.
Enthusiasts want to make their cars perform better, and of course, look more capabile. Additionally, some of the mods help us stand out from the pedestrian owners, and even help us identify each other, and take a small measure of pride in your car. I admit, that my car currently appears stock, and i hate that.
When i see a de-badged, aftermarket-exhaust, or clear corner A4, i know the driver is someone who is at least moderately into cars (and in Chicago, almost every A4 is driven by some girl who could care less.) It's a breath of fresh air!
When you drive all day and see nothing but endless SUV's and minivans on the road, its refreshing to catch sight of a clean, modded car, driven by someone who actually cares about it. I don't care what sort of car (of course ill smile at the Audis) in America, the car enthusiasts are far and few between. If i see a well done car, i often strike up a conversation with the owner, to see what they've done. It's great to have conversations with perfect strangers about topics like cars.
When you think about it, we modify everything we love. Ive modified my house (or room), my computer, my car(s), etc. Who doesn't sit there and think, how can i improve this? If you love something, it's natural to want to personalize it, to put your mark on it. It just so happens its pretty easy to do this to cars.
Its midnight, time to go sleep, sorry for rambling for so long

I'm pretty sure my car is one of the most externally modded A4s out there. See if you agree by checking out my website <href="http://home.mdi.ca/james561" target="_new">here</a>.
To me, the Audi A4 is an absolutely beautiful car, which makes it an excellent starting point to make a truly <i>special</i> car out of. All I know is, I, the owner of the car, absolutely love the way it looks with my overboard external mods. I actually think that going overboard with internal/performance mods on a street car, especially a wonderful entry luxury cruiser like the A4, is missing the point of what makes this car so special. but then, that's just how <b>I,/b> view the car. I guess it's a good thing I'm not in charge of your modifications then. =Þ<p>James Wu

Really the definition of "pimpy" depends on the person. Since I am a teenager, I kinda go along with the trends, like saying "Damn that car's pimp!" you know just because it looks cool. I really don't think its a bad thing, "pimp" is not a bad connotation in my opinion. I take great pride in my car, and it *is* MY car, so really I can do whatever I want.
If the stupid picture poster worked you could see my definition of why I say my car is "pimp". It's silver, clear corner and side blinkers, lowered w/ 18" Fittipaldi Turbolares, debadged, with 20% metallic tint all around. If you don't understand why I tinted go live in FL. The rings are still on the front and back. I don't consider this a car that an actual pimp would drive, that would be like a Mercedes CLK with 20" 100 spoke gold rims, hydros, ground effects, spoiler, limo tint, etc etc.
You really can't tell if someone is chipped and has an exhaust if the outside is completely stock. Well you may hear the exhaust but still. I think most of the people upgrade the performance while also upgrading looks. In my case with a 2.8M, there is not much I can do - I don't have $5000+ to dish out for a supercharger, but I am getting exhaust soon.
Just my views on the whole thing. Everyone has their own car, they can do whatever they want.<p>~Mike
