broken down was 4 hours for the maintenance and 5.5 hours for the timing belt.
Total cost estimate with parts was 800 bones...
The timing seem too long to any of you? Thanks for the input.
Also, what is hte best sparks to put in my 12v? I need to get those and wires. Any suggestions?
Thanks guys

I have IK20 Denso plugs, but I am sure there are a dozen people here that will flame me because of that. I am keeping my iridium/copper plugs so **** off.
Magnecor cables are $60 or so from magnecor. OEM cables are way more expensive and arent going to be as good.
What the hell maintainence is he doing? I'd get a list before I say ok to anything. Personally I'd have him just do the timing belt and water pump business, the rest is DIY territory.

I got the STI spark plug set (by Bremi) #431 for under $100 from germanautoparts.com.
That was the OEM equipment on my 12v, and it lasted 120k miles, so I'd say that wire set is pretty good.
I use again NGK BKUR6ET-10 (tri-electrode) spark plugs, which have worked great in the past. They cost 7-$8 at a VW dealer. The part number is 101 000 033 AA. Bosch +4 plugs were a disaster in my engine.
I hear good things about Beru Ultra-X UXF5.6 (0 002 345 601) spark plugs in the 12v engine. They are 4-electrode plugs, and they cover two heat ranges (5 and 6).

Get the itemized list, and start asking yourself if you're comfortable tackling those tasks. I'm guessing the timing belt is something you don't want to tackle, so we'll leave that out of this discussion...(and 5.5 hours for the timing belt is very reasonable).

the guy mentioned air filter, oil change, plugs, wires, and a few other things like check the brakes, etc etc etc.
I don't know why that would take 4 hours, but I know this dealer tends to exaggerate how long things should take and leave themselves a lil room to make an extra buck or two
Basically, If 5.5 hours is reasonable for the TB, than I will be very happy with that. I might hardball with the guy a bit to see if he drops it any... but other than that I think I'd be set.
The only other thing I might have him do while the car is apart is to install a snub mount and possibly have him put an EFK in the car.
