Default Dealer Replacing ECM in 2003 1.8T CVT

2003 A4 1.8T CVT; 6,430 miles
Service department notified me that they are waiting to receive a new ECM to install in my car. The extent of my understanding is that this is the "brain" of the car. Some postings on this board suggest that this is a "radical" procedure. Is that correct, and what concerns / questions should I present to the dealer when picking up the car, if any? Just out of curiosity, what would a part like that cost if not covered under warranty?

Default wrong forum, but... answers..

the actual labor is not radical at all...

it is the brain of the engine yes...

I would ask them WHY?... was it an upgrade? failed original part? same part number or newer revision?

from the dealer? 700-1200 maybe?

Oops...put this on B5, not B6
It is a failed original part. The car basically went haywire. Preliminary symptoms were intermittent start failures. Then it wouldn't start at all, and nothing else would work right either (e.g., power windows).
