The dealer wants $190 to look at the car. Should i scrape the inside of the connectors and have a friend clear the code or bite the $190 and let them ream me for a problem they prob know exactly how to fix? The only recurring glitch on my 98.5 now with 65k miles is the airbag light. Here's what I've learned over 65k miles.
1. If the airbag light is on, the entire airbag system is disabled and will not operate in an accident, so it's a good idea to get it checked out.
2. Since I'm 100 miles from the nearest Audi dealer, I bought a VAG-COM tool which lets me reset the airbag light (and do some other things). Mine seems to come on every 10k-15k miles. About a third of the time the VC tool tells me "intermittent" fault; this means "who knows why it happened?" as near as I can tell. In this case, just clearing the fault with VC works, and the light stays off.
3. Other times, there was a specific cause, high resistance in the driver's side airbag, always the same. I watched an Audi tech trace this one out once, and he fixed it by disconnecting the airbag plug under the driver's seat (in my non-electric seat 1.8t, there are 3 plugs; the red one is the one related to my particular airbag problem) and using a pic tool to scrape around inside the connectors. NOTE: he used some sort of plug in device while he did this to prevent the airbag from discharging accidentally from the tinkering.
His fix was good for the usual 10k-15k miles or so; the next time it returned, I used the VC tool which pointed to the same fault code as before.
So, I just stayed low, disconnected the plug, scraped what I could, reconnected; reset the fault, and the light stayed off, again for 10-15k. Two saved trips to the dealer have more than paid for the VAG-COM tool for me.
Bottom line: if you want your airbag to work in an accident, you have to get that airbag light off, whatever it takes.
I had the air bag problem too on my audi and even though it was out of warrenty, I got it fixed for

free from the audi dealer for free. Basically I bitched about how this no longer is a warrenty issue but a safety issue. I even told them that I fear for my life every time I got into my audi. They put me under good will program at the audi dealer and replaced my passenger side air bag for free. Good luck.
the problem is not the light, the problem is whatever is wrong with the airbag. THERE IS A RECALL.

You might be a able to get the problem fixed at the dealer because there is a recall on the airbag system. Let me know. All you have to do is go to the audi dealer and give them your vin number, they will tell you if there are any recalls that have not been completed on your car. also, you can do a recall search online. I don't know the website offhand.
this is a very common problem...I've had the same problem as have friends...

im jsut ignoring it for now since i dont really like airbags anyways, but i am pretty sure it was the connector under the seat, since it unplugged pretty easily, then i put it back in and couldnt remove it again. now all i need to do is reset the code
