Default Dealing w/ dealers (long)

I'm trying to negotiate a 2001 a4 1.8t with 3 different dealers (by phone and e-mail). Ii specifically requested all three to include everything (e.g., base car, options, and destination) exceot tax and title. Dealer #1 gave me such a ridiculously low price -- more than $4k under MSRP, and roughly $1500 under invoice (that's right) -- that he's either incompetent or playing games. I asked him to verify and fax me the quote, but he hasn't responded. Dealer #2 gave me a very decent price -- about 4% over invoice. But after I hinted that this was acceptable, he quickly called me back to apologize and say "someone else had made a mistake" and that destination was extra ($550). Does anyone find this believable?#1 is apparently a real loser; I'm thinking of trying to talk #2 back down, given his "regrettable error." I'm still waiting on Dealer #3 to call me with their quote, but they have a reputation for very small discounts... Ain't this fun?!

Default just finished the same thing....

... and, this being the first time I have done all the work for a new car sale, I understand why everyone hates car salesman.

some of them were SO rude, that although I could have saved $600 compared to the dealer I went with, I refused to on the grounds that I was treated so poorly.

and then the price game "what price would you like to pay sir?" frankly, I would like it to be free, thanks.

arg.... so frustrating! for better or worse, I can't afford a new car for a while now... heehee

You may be a candidate for trying one of the .com companies. Prices are clearly displayed on-line, there are no rude salespeople to deal with, and they will do factory orders as well as acquisitions of cars in retail dealer stock. I bought my A6 this way for $1200 less than my best dealer quote. Feel free to e-mail me if you'd like more info.

Default Dealing w/ dealers update

Dealer #1 has finally gotten it together and offered a very decent quote. But how certain is a quote? I am sure that she is not counting a charge for pearl paint.; perhaps she's not aware that pearl is now included under metallic? How can I lock the price down in case they suddenly "discover" that the price for some option has increased x amount? Dealer #2 couldn't match #1's offer, and Dealer #3 came in with a lousy quote, as expected. If I can be sure that Dealer#2's figure can be locked in, I'll go for it.

Regarding carbuying web sites, their quotes are near MSRP for our area. Autobytel, etc. only got me in touch with dealers. I still had to negotiate the price. It was a lot easier getting a Subaru through Carpoint last year! But this is Audi.....
