I dont know, posting a random musing. I've got $18k left to pay off on the A4. I've got 68,000+ miles, so I'd most likely have to sell at a loss, but would probably break even if I parted out my mods and donated a few pints of blood.. I just love the look of the e36.
Discuss (mainly from a financial perspective if possible) ;-)

No matter what...the A4 will be cheaper in the long run even if you continue to mod. You have to factor out the insurance cost on the M3 also. Instead of thinking about monthly payments, think long term. How much are you gonna dish out in 3 years?
For me, if I go STI...i'll have to dish out 200/month more and about the same insurance rate cuz i'm planning to move outta NJ(highest rate in nation).
I'll break even also if i part out the mods...but i think i'm keeping this for a while. trying kick the car modding addiction of mine and the STI will put me in a deeper hole...but the Vishnu Stage 1 kit's looking hot! (300whp!)

1. Weather. Obviously you cannot drive it to any great effect in snow.
2. Maintenance = major pain when you have to do it. I'm not suggesting they break all that often. They are not Honda's, but I suspect you know this already.
3. When you get a used sports, or "sporty" car you should take into account the level of restraint the previous owner(s) applied to daily driving. Toss up here.
4. Insurance. How's your current policy? Then apply that to the E36. Lots of tickets or accidents?
5. Modding budget? These can be big money hogs.
6. Dealing wit others peoples lack of attention to paint protection is a major PITA. Peeve of mine.
I'm not trying to talk you out of it. They are great cars. Just a bit more of a hassle at the inopportune moments. Get it if you want it. If you have reservations, make sure it's the right idea. BMW's bite back worse than Audi's from my experience.
My $.02

my buddy wanted to do vishnu on his '02 rex, but $$ prohibited him.
Ugh, such a toss-up here. Trying to work in all the details, I just don't know what to do. I can deal without a car for a while if needs be... I would love to get an E36 M3 though.

Less practical than my A4, but I'm not regularly pulling kids or anything like that along.

what's killing me on the STI is the stereo. It's perfect that it doesn't come with one, but i know i'll want a $5000+ system in there. car + winter tires + stereo + stage one kit = donating blood, sperm, stripping, etc!
