Did anyone try to save an unserviced battery by adding the proper amount of water?

in my recently purchased 2001 A4 my battery went dead one day, I found two cells very low on water, refilled and recharged to no avail, I even tried refilling with acid with no luck. If your battery has lost it's charge it's probably history.

usally get a couple more weeks out of it, but then it dies anyway. My experience has been that the battery looses no water for a long time, then will start loosing it. I suspect as they reach end of life the efficency drops, causing more heat, boiling the water off. Perhaps someone with professional battery experience will chime in?

a lot of money at times. He'll probably go with a cheap replacement, since longevity is not an issue.
