98.5 2.8 Avant 56K. I just had the timing belt, waterpump and chain tensioner seals redone. Today, I had the hood open while the engine was running and it seamed to be maiking a lot of valve noise. Is this normal and I just never noticed until now? I also just went to 0-40W Mobil 1. Would that cause more engine noise? Thanks ahead of time for the feed back.

that's normal.. If there are any pronounced ticks, raps, or if it sounds like a diesel, you could have a bad tensioner for the cam chain (the one inside the valve cover, which connects the 2 cams to each other)

You may want to move to a thicker version of M1. I usually use 10w-30 or 40 M1 in the winters and its fairly quiet. My experience, the 0-40W stuff is too darn thin. Its probably great for manufacturers who suggest you don't change oil for 10 or 15k and have the car make it over warranty. Good luck.

"Sounds like a diesel" is a good description. I have an appointment to take it in Monday. I took it to a good independed Audi/BMW shop that I and my family have have used before.

valve noise is probably the lifters (common) not being oiled well enough, the comments about the oil should help. I hope to try out some seafoam next oil change to see if that helps out.
