Default Do A4 cats fail frequently?

I have to replace my cat on my 01 1.8T with less than 100k miles, thanks to people here I have found a few places to get them cheaper than the dealer but I am still concerned as to why it failed. When I did a search on this it seems to be a common problem, yet I have owned several other cars taht have gone well over 200k with an original cat and never had a failure. Is this something to do with the turbo and the heat it generates? Or could something else have failed which allowed unburned gas to get to the cat? I am just worried becuase the car isn't giving me a CEL and I am afraid I'll put this cat in and a few months later find out it is dead too. Any thoughts as to what I could check would be appreciated.

Is there a particular reason? Is it higher heat with a turbo? Like I said I don't want to put in a cat from say Random Tech and end up trashing it in a few months because something else is screwed up. I thought heat was the only thing that killed cats and the #1 reason to over temp was gas getting to it. Am I wrong? If not, what could have failed to allow this without throwing a CEL?

Default There are a ton of places that...

were selling DEC (~$265) cats but I couldn't find much info on them, then someone here mentioned Random Technology (~320). They seemed to be working pretty well and didn't throw any CEL. You can buy direct from them or from one of their distributors which seem to have better pricing thatn direct. I had also heard that Random makes the cats for APR so I was hoping they are better quality and a direct fit with no mods required.

I had read somewhere in my searches that some had used them but I can't remember if it was good or bad. The price sounds good but is that for a direct fit or universal?
