but that's tricky in the dry and dirt... trickier in the snow. I wouldn't want to try it on the street.... Experienced or not... I'd try to keep that on the track or empty parking lots or roads.

....which I believe have a more forward power bias versus the manual-trans Subaru which is 50-50 just like Quattro.

As an owner of both, each with Blizzak snow tires, the Subie is not as fast, but does change direction better than the sports supension A4.
Notice all the supension travel on rally cars?
Manual trans Subies use a geared system similar to quattro with a 50-50 split while the girls trans is 90 front 10 rear split and uses computer sensors and clutches. Manual transmissions make a huge difference on awd cars.

The 90/10 split is standard until the sensors detect slip and send more power to the rear.
I would guess that sliding around in the snow the system was "hunting" alot. Automatic Subies shift kind of clunky in the dry.
Can you tell I don't like automatics?

The manual tranny 50/50 torque split is seamless and feels just like the Audi. The auto uses a variable torque that can go from 90/10 to 50/50. I thought the auto tranny was hard shifting and the torque transfer much more noticable than with my wife's '96 GSX (similar setup).
I drove an Outback for 4 years with the manual and other than the transmission being a "slow" shifter (would simply NOT let me shift quickly - like the syncros held me out until they got damn good and ready), it performed well.

And the AWD was great. It wasn't as effecient as quattro and I can do better "hero" slides in the snow with the AUDI, but it did it's job very well. I never got out of shape when I didn't want to and never got stuck even in 30"" of powder.
The transmission was another issue though...svx's only came with AT's which seemed to self destruct every 10K or so. Luckily I had an extended warranty and never had fork out the 5K it cost to replace my transmission(3 Times!!!!)
