do i have heated side mirrors or do they just suck?
1997 A4 w/ cold weather package. it doesn't seem like the mirrors completely defrost the ice that's crusted on them. do the 97's with cold weather come with heated mirrors? or are mine fading out?

Its' usually just the element in the mirror glass. Not huge money, as long as you don't have the ...
self dimming mirrors.. I got one for the wife's car, it was in the $30 range IIRC.. (non selfdimming.)

The mirrors stay heated all the time (dumb Audi design)...
so the heating element burns out relatively fast. If you install a new one, there's an AudiWorld FAQ on how to rewire the mirror to only heat up when you use the defogger. Might be helpful to you.

In addition, the new heated mirror glass available from your dealer....
...will have a thermostat built into it to keep the mirrors from heating up when the outside temp is above a certain temp (can't recall what that temp is though), so this will help your new set last longer.
