Do I need that special tool to compress the rear caliper or can I just use a C-clamp?

you need to turn the piston as you compress it.

Default you dont "need" one per say... I use chanel locks and a C-clamp, some use needle nose pliers...

you ahve to be carefull to not tear the boot on the piston itself,
but put the clamp on it, apply light ressure, then use the chanel locks to turn the piston while tightening with the clamp.
I works well.
looser ones can be done with just needle nose pliers in the grooves, ush in and turn, i can do my rear pass side like that but not the rear driver...most the time.

Default And if you have a welder, weld it to the end of a C-clamp

Voila, your own custom caliper piston retraction tool!
