Do I need that special tool to compress the rear caliper or can I just use a C-clamp?

chanellock pliers to grab the lip of the piston and spin it. just dont clamp don on the boot as the piston compresses.
spin a little and take up slack by tightening clamp, repeat, it works quite well once you get the hang of it.

Called 3 of them near me too and I always got "There should be no reason why you have to twist it while you push in, no car has brakes like that." I just ordered one from germanautoparts, might as well have one around all the time for $40.
