This isn't A4-specific, so I think I can answer.
If you leave the filter on, all the crud that it filtered out of your old oil is still in there, so it's flow rate and ability to filter out more crud is diminished. In short, given the low cost/effort that goes into changing the filter as well, I'd change both every 3000-4000 miles.
