do you guys think a well setup intake wold be the same or maybe a little better then stock airbox?
I have TAP intake but i knolw it is just sucking in hot air. im debating whether i should just go stock or make a nice funnel and heat shield. I would rater just make the heat shield.

Definately.....
on my 97, the stock air box only had the scoop that ran to the front as the air inlet (it didn't have the flap that the newer cars have)
I have the TAP setup, and added a heat shield. I did some testing with a VAG-COM and found that by adding a heat shield, the intake temps were close to stock levels (within a few degrees)
The ideal setup would be the stock airbox, with a 2.5" - 3" hose running to it from the bumper grill area.
But I'm not sure if you'd get that great sound that you get with a cone intake
