Default Well, I think they call it some kind of sound dampening device,

but plastic slides easier than aluminum, it offers some protection to the oil pan scraping across something. If you lower your car you will scrape it eventually.

aerodynamics, sound deadening, keeps engine bay clean, improves airflow in engine bay.

Default go drag a piece of aluminum down the road, then put plastic under it and do it again then tell

me which test had less damage.

Default Find me one post where someone has ground a hole in their oil pan.

If you can, then you lend validity to your statement.

I would suspect that you'll find people have not ground a hole in their oil pan. Instead, I'll bet you'll find that people have *hit* their oil pan resulting in a crack, which required the replacement of the oil pan. If that is the case, the plastic belly pan affords no protection (or at least, not the kind you need).
