Default Hummm... isn't keeping the engine clean and improving airflow kinda important? I dunno, I am a noob

Just want to decide whether it's worth the $100 or so to get one of those things..

RKA looks like you know a lot, so what do you think about my original concern with snow, salt, and slush getting on the motor without the cover? Do you think it would be worth it then to get the cover just to keep the dirt and salt away?

Default The engine isn't going to die without it...

Personally, I would get the replacement though. It serves a function, and $100 isn't going to break the bank. But I wouldn't buy it because I think I'm going to save my oilpan. That just isn't the case.

Default Aluminum is a soft metal, when it hits the pavement it will grab,

the grabbing affect of the aluminum will have greatly increases your chances of warping/bending your oil pan, not to mention that it will get pretty scratched up. If the plastic hits, it will slide much easier than the aluminum and help protect the oil pan from getting any kind of damage, may not stop it but can definitely help prevent the damage from happening.

Anyone know the actual part #? And are they different for 96-97 versus later A4's?

Default good luck...you're going to have to buy one from the dealer...I've been told that most cars that...

end up at the wrecking yard don't have them. Dads in Sacramento said they very very rarely get them in. I searched and ended up getting on at the dealer. I think I might have seen one at germanautoparts.com or clairparts.com. It's big so shipping will be expensive.
