temp of coolant in the radiator or temp of coolant in the head? Does the gauge use the same sensor for both, ECU and the gauge? I know only of the sensor at the back of the head in the coolant line.

...when I park my car after driving here in Phoenix during the summer and then go and start it up anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes later, the coolant temperature needle is anywhere from 60% to 75%, whereas when running it is straight up at 50%. I'm thinking from the heat transfer from the heads, the coolant gets much hotter nearer them when the car is shut off and the coolant isn't being circulated.

It makes sense to measure the coolant coming out of the head rather than measuring the radiator coolant temp. That way, if overheating is about to happen, you'll notice it before the radiator overheats.
