Default Does it matter if the battery is left connected during ECU removal?

I went to the FAQ and archives and no one seems to disconnect the battery. The APR instructions, however, advice disconnecting the battery.
Is it really that crucial to disconnect it, or is APR just trying to prevent a "I got run over by my car lawsuite?"
Just wondering, because I am removing the ECU this weekend to mail it off on Monday.

Thanks for any advice.

Well, you can install RAM with the computer plugged in! Just not on. Same with the car
