Aside from the tech bulletin (not patient enough to get a kit from AoA) don't waste your time with all the fantasy of the tech section here at AW that thing under the seat is a motion detector or something but not anything to do with the antenna. You have been warned...
The 24 hour journey is almost over for me as I'm fashioning a stubby antenna that you won't see inside the headrest. Will have TNC so can be detached.
As shown below the Avant antenna doesn't require you to pop out the light. And on a side note popping out the back seat is not a bad idea as it probably needs shop vac'd like mine did.

My remote works from a hell of a lot further than any of y'alls. There is a lot of misinformation out there but this thread should save anyone with a 1998+ much time and stress.
The madness is over I'm going to sleep. That bitch works from like Idaho now. LOL :P
------------------ FAQ This too I guess as it is the real deal---------------
Do what ever you want but here is what I did once I finally got the real factory antenna lead from all the way down to the base shielding. Shown previously is the antenna sticking up and the shielding starts about 10-12 inches from the wire shown sticking out of the C pillar in the above post.
I patched in stronger antenna by soldering and shrink wrapping. It has about 6-7db gain and a much longer fully shielded lead.

removed. Yep, the one about the under the rear seat stuff. That is 100% wrong for both body flavors. It is a sensor for fq's sake not the antenna or anything to do with it.

a lot of time going through the back seat, the rear qtr panel where the actual unit is and the terminals for the antenna root is that the actual antenna will be in that same pillar regardless if there is a light there or not. Unless you have the new terminals and it is already fed out the rear of the car like the bulletin.
What year is your car? I'm about to do my wife's '00 sooner or later so I will let you know if you haven't done it yourself by then...

it has no lights on the side just one center dome like light in the rear. I pulled the carpet away enough in trunk to see that she doesn't have the upgraded antenna kit. No **** as it only works from 5 feet or less.
Anyway so since I really don't want to undo all that trim in her car. Was a PITA just to get that one C pillar cover back on the Avant last night.
So for the sedan I may see if I can get the kit from Audi as at would be easy to just plug in their new antenna by replacing terminals 1 & 7 on the outside black plug with the pink pieces at the top. The only one on the unit that is labeled with numbers so you can't fq it up. That way you only undo the carpet in the back as wort part of disassembly process.
On a side note sounds like the B5 S4 came from the factory with the upgraded outside antenna so if someone is parting out an S4 around you see if you can grab that.

That trim "c pillar" panel looks like a pita to remove. Knowing me, i will crack or mess up the fabric.
Im gonna look in to your way, of pulling back the carpet.
Thanks
