Default Downshift failure in auto mode.

I'm posting this for a friend. His 1999 A4 was recently involved in an accident and went over the median suffering a lot of undercarriage damage. All that was supposedly fixed under the collision claim but he now has a strange transmission problem. I drove the car so I'm reporting in the first person.

In automatic mode, when coming to a stop at a stop sign, the transmission seems to be slow (3-4 secs) to downshift into 1st gear. As a result, when I step on the gas within those 3-4 secs, the transmission realizes it's not in 1st, downshifts to 1st, while at the same time the revs are climbing, and leaps forward as it suddenly finds first with the rpm way up there. There are no warnings or messages or lights flashing on the console.

I did some additional debugging. If I wait for those 3-4 secs, then the transmission completes it's downshift and then behaves normally. Also, tiptronic mode seemed normal under the same scenario.

My questions are:
1. What could be causing the slow downshift?
2. Are there any transient codes I could pick up with an OBD monitor?

Thanks.

Default Re: Downshift failure in auto mode.

For the activity on this board, I'm surprised by the lack of a response. :-( Goodbye.
