Try accelerating in a higher gear...say 5th, from 50 to 70 mph. Do it again, but in 4th gear...feel the difference?
Now, how should you shift? Press clutch, shift gears, and let clutch out slowly to allow tranny and engine rpms to match (if you don't let the clutch out slowly enough, you'll feel the car jerk a little). When you get better, try blipping the throttle just before you let the clutch back out. This brings the engine speed up to where it should be when the clutch is fully engaged. This allows for a smoother shift, less wear and tear on the clutch (when done right), and a quicker shift. Warning...this rev matching business takes a bit of practice to get right.
