already did (and undid) the Stern power ring, as no change except excessive vibration above 40mph was the result.
have motor mounts and snub mount ready to be installed, just seems like a challenge and may wait till spring.
was wondering if anyone have had good results with the Stern rear diff bushings
thanks,

Three things I'd recommend to get rid of any drivetrain slop:
Apikol rear diff mount (causes vibrations, but only when you lug the engine - for example, 5th gear under 1800 rpm)
DTS - either AWE or ASP is fine.
034 snub mount & bracket (also causes vibration since it's so tight in the bracket)
If you don't have a DTS that would probably make the biggest difference.
I have those three things, with the stock 1.8t engine mounts and transmission mounts and have 0 drivetrain slop.

trying to do this the "cheap" way... so far with no luck. Keep thinking that I'd like replace whatever part has gone bad, rather than adding something... I suppose if the drivetrain slop is stemming from enough things, then it becomes a viable solution to add the DTS

worst symptom is when I let the car downshift by itself when coming to a stop.. between 3 and 2, there is a noticeable clunk and thud felt in the car... seems to come from the rear, although I've had a mechanic say it seemed to come from the front.

I would check to make sure that your snub mount bracket is still attached to the engine properly. When I pulled my old motor out, all the bolts were missing and it was completely detached from the engine.
You can check your motor/transmission mounts to see if they are leaking or broken (i've had the bottoms break off before - so basically, the motor was just sitting there not bolted to anything)
There's really not much to our cars as far as mounts are concerned, so if all that stuff checks out, then all you can really do is add parts like the DTS.

... I had a mechanic tell me this as part of a drivetrain slop diagnostic. He also said that the rear differential seemed to have a lot of play, which is why I was thinking that the bushing kit might help. Stern power ring did not help one bit, and I took it off after a few weeks.
NOTE: I have not yet installed the new snub and motor mounts, and I'm hoping that will take care of it. car only has 83k mi on it

.. mechanic's diagnosis was that the rear differential "seemed to have a lot of play". Also, the clunks/thuds seem to come from the rear. Just trying to gauge people's success with the rear diff bushing kit, that's all.
