Good eye! Mine was plastic also. I believe all post-facelift 2.8's have the leather covered one.
I found that one on e-bay -- much nicer. Plus the dog had chewed on my old one....

I brought mine to a good upholstery shop and the replaced ...
just the side panels that was torn on both drivers and passenger seat and it turned out like new. if you don't feel like DIY thats an easy way out.
