I"m supposed to drive my 99.5 1.8tqm on a road trip this weekend but just noticed a noise getting increasingly loud (that I think is drivetrain related and not a wheel bearing). Sort of a a cavitating/soft pattering sound that increases pitch with speed (except in 1st ) regardless of being in gear or not. As soon as I shift into second even if the speed is lower than 1st I notice it - could be just the increased enginge speed masking it, but hard to tell.
I"ve noticied it for a few weeks but it was so quiet I just thought it was my bypass valve gone again. The thing that makes me think it's not a wheel bearing is the noise is different than last time and it doesn't appear to dissapate as I unload one side of the car or the other when turning.
I've done my archive searching and come up with nothing definitive. I've read some instances of the center support bearing in the quattro drivetrain going...have you seen this at all? Could one of my diff's be low on fluid?
My weekend driving plans include ~170 miles each way and I"m wondering if I'm going to blow anything up before I can get it in the shop next week.
thanks
Alex
