Dumb Question: What's the difference between DBW and Non-DBW???

As I understand it, DBW cars have an electric throttle control versus a mechanical one on non-DBW cars. The difference is that with DBW, it's more like you are requesting the car to go faster as opposed to ordering it to go faster. Basically, the car has the option to ignore you, if it wants to.
DBW can sometimes have a slower response to a change in acceleration.
On A4s, however, I think all of the DBW cars also have VVT (maybe some of the 2000 models have DBW but not, VVT, I'm not sure where the line is drawn). VVT (variable valve timing) is superior to static valve timing, so it's a trade-off. VVT gives more power at the top end of the tach and is part of the reason why the 2001 A4's have more horsepower.
