e brake question

e brake question
last night while waiting for a friend outside his house i parked on a hill with my car running for about five minutes. the hill was not too steep at all, but after about a minute in neutral with the ebrake on i started to smell burnign brake in the car, as if i were driving with the e brake on. why wouls such a gentle hill cause my ebrake to smell like that? any ideas? TIA
