I am about to buy e-codes for my early 99 from ECS tuning. Do I have to get the wiring harness, or can I do it without? If I do need it does anyone know where I can just get the plug and I can solder on the wires myself? Is it the same plug used for factory style one piece lights that I could get through a dealer?

the old harness is round, the new ones are "ovalish" i didn't want to wait another week to get the lights in so i just spliced it. i think there's a pic in my pic poster.

if you have the old circle shaped on your stock housing you will nee to upgrade to the newer, longer style plug or do some kinda nasty "just make it work" solution.. if you have the longer newer plug that they use on the newer projector housings you wont need to buy anything. the upgrade harness from awe is a total rip off. do a search and you should be able to find the audi part # but some dealers wont sell it... who know why.... try to use the search feature and the ask if you have more questions.

BUT the metal crimp part numbers were wrong - they were too big! Of course the dealer will not take them back since they were special order.
So then, what are the part numbers for the metal crimps/pins??? (Since I already searched)

The boot that goes over it may be 4A0-941-189 - BUT it looks just like he original one so it is either the wrong part # or the round plug and this plug take the same boot (in other words unless you find a different part # - use the one you have)
As for the wires - I am searching for just the crimps. The part number I found was wrong.
You can get 6" yellow wires with crimps already on both ends. Cut it in half and you have two.
According to ETKA - the part numbers for the wires are 000-979-133, 000-979-133A, 000-979-225, or 000-979-225A. the difference between these is the guage of the wire. I forget which is the same as the headlight wire...
(I did not want to do get the pin/wire since you then use Butt connectors. They are not always the best solution and do not look OEM. Besides the harness is long enough already. Even tho this is what AWE does, I am still looking for the pin only part #)
