Default Edmunds performance numbers on A4 1.8t.

I just noticed that Edmunds.com has posted that the 2001 A4 1.8t FWD for a 0-60 time of 7.5 sec. That's compared with the Quattro time of 8.4 sec. This seems like a big difference. Does this seem right to anyone??

It seems right, the Jetta 1.8T was clocked at 7.1, they are not that far apart on weight.

Default The Jetta is that low???

WOW! I was having a hard time deciding between the two being that I've always loved Dubs and wanted a new one. So I drove them back to back (Jetta 1.8T and A4 1.8TQSM) and the A4 felt *considerably* quicker, SOTP of course. I'm just amazed that it's such a big difference...

-No A4 yet, plans to order in a couple weeks after my trip to Germany next week. Yay!

Default That looks a little fishy.

They should be within a few tenths of a sec. The gearing on the manual quattros are lower to make up for the weight.

At least the early A4s were that way-- but it might have changed for the 2001 models.

Default Audiusa lists 7.5 sec and 8.2 sec (not 8.4) - High school physics answer included in message

You can easily work out that the 0-60mph time will change by the weight ratio. So 3250/3000*7.5 comes out to 8.125 sec. Throw in at least 5% power loss due to the Quattro drivetrain, and it's easy to see that you actually have to change the gearing to even get the 8.2 sec.

Notice also that the extra weight also affets cornering.

Default You are right, I misread the info. This means the gearing is quite different.

Does Audi publish the gearing ratios?

Default Nope the gearing shouldnt be different...but the weight difference between FWD and AWD...

Is what makes that .3 difference...The difference in weight between a FWD manual and AWD manual 1.8t is 243 lbs...and a difference of .3 secs from 0-60mph. The difference between the A6 2.7T AWD manual and the S4 (2.7t) manual is 166lbs..with a difference in the 0-60mph only a .1 second advantage in favor of the S4. If you do the math using the weight and times...it works out to around a .3 difference between the different weights of the 1.8T.
