Electric Fan Cooling Problem
'99 A4 2.8
The car is starting to run hot when not moving. The electric fan runs when the airconditioner is on, but not otherwise. I replaced the fan switch (blue, D shaped, 4 pin connector) in the lower radiator hose. I did not find any opens in the wiring from the fan switch. Does anybody have any suggestions? The mail order parts store (which I don't trust a whole lot) says there are 2 fan switches, but I don't see any others.

Mine was different
I had my switch in the lower left corner of the radiator, even though the Bentley manual said it was in the lower radiator hose like yours. Try jumping the swith with a wire and see if the fan runs. If not you might have to replace the relay for the electric fan. See the link below.

Here are the part numbers

What about the viscous clutch fan?
When the the cars at idle that is what keeps it at the correct temperature. The heat from the radiator causes the clutch to engage.
I replaced mine about 3 months ago for a similar problem.
The two speed electric fan will only come on if the car overheats.

Re: Mine was different
I did jump the connector pins. Fan did not run. I wasn't sure if there had to be certain resistance associated with the switch closure. Bently says to replace the fan, but the fan does work with the air.

If its that new I wouldn't think it was that.
My fan clutch had 140K on it. Those clutches are pretty $$$.
Where does the temp gauge go? Should be vertical. How old the water pump?

Here's another good post
This was one from ModifiedA4 who helped with my questions. Unfortunitely I am still having problems with mine and will have to search all the wiring this weekend if possible.
You don't need to replace your fan if it is running with the AC. Check the fuses listed in this diagram. If they are OK, try replacing the relay.

https://forums.audiworld.com/a4/msgs/2555253.phtml

Re: If its that new I wouldn't think it was that.
Temp guage has always run vertical. Now if its hot out and the car is stopped it will work its way to the first line to the right of vertical. It has never done that before. I replaced the water pump 2 years ago with the timing belt (70k miles). The car has 96k on it now.
