Emissions warranty is only 2 years/24000 miles

This is the big reason why I'm concerned about all of these check engine (Malfunction Indicator Light) I read about, including the one I got on Friday. Except in California, the Emissions Control System Warranty is only 2 years/24,000 miles. California Emissions covers specific emissions performance items for 3 years/50,000 miles.
I'm not in California, so I've got the (inadequate) 2 year/24,000 mile warranty. After this warranty, the only things covered under an 8 year/80,000 mile emissions warranty is catalytic converter failure, ECU failure, or MIL lamp inoperative, AND ONLY if you fail an EPA approved state maintanance test that requires the owner to bear a penalty (such as none use of vehicle until it passes such a test).
The only think I can think of is that this is the Federal minimum warranty for a fully working emissions system. Audi has to put it in their book by law, perhaps. Maybe what happens is they warrant the whole car for 3 years/50,000 miles, including these items that only MUST be warranted for 2 years/24,000 miles.
Still this is QUITE concerning, and I need to get clarification.

Chris Murphy
1998 A4 2.8QM Pearl (with MIL light on)
Well there is an 8 year/80,000 mile emissions warranty on the A4 for SOME things (which may cover the 5 year/50,000 mile federally mandated warrany); but there is a Federal Emissions Warranty section in my book and it says 2 years/24,000 miles. There is nothing about 5 years/50,000 miles.
This is a 1998 A4, bought last October.

Chris Murphy
