Default engine cover - is it needed?

I want to remove the engine cover and the plastic cover above the airbox. Aside from being aesthetic, do these serve any purpose like heat shielding?

I'm going to go with "no". Aesthic only, IMO. Why do you want to remove them?

Default Long message Re:"Aesthetic only...Why do you want to remove them?"

I heard something about the coil packs crapping out because of heat, could the cover prevent heat transfer? also could this be the reason for the cover over the airbox - to help keep it a little cooler? I would think that the engine cover would trap heat even though it has those tiny holes heat rises and instead of going up and dissapating, it is acting as an insulator holding hte heat in. After some driving touch the cover - that thing gets HOT!!!!!

personally I dont like it
its an engine cover, I want to see the engine
to me they're there so people who dont know about cars or who just dont care can say well isnt that purty - Im not saying everyone who keeps their engine covers is an idiot or is into all show no go, but I find theres beauty in an engine's functionality the covers simplify the engine bay and make it look too docile and refined - anyone else agree?

also, this seems trivial but any extra weight that can be taken off without hurting the performance or driveability should be taken off
obviously the interior could be dealt with, but then why not get a passat? oh well...
