Default Engine Whine usually related to ground or RCA cables.. more

If your RCA cables are ANYWHERE near, or crossing a power cable, particularly your amp power cable, noise is common.

Other causes can be related to a bad ground from your amp. Make sure you have a clean solid metal ground for the amp. I used one of the seatbelt mounting bolts in the trunk.

I would honestly be surprised if it is from the ECU causing whine. The quality of the RCA's can make a difference. When people talk about ECU interference, they usually worry more about the car being affected by the cable, not the other way around.

Default Alternator is an AC output device which then is rectified by some diodes inside the alternator

the noise you hear is actually from the RF which is released by the diode during the reverse recovery interval when the remainant charge is being depleted from the junction of the device, this happens pretty quickly and tends to create RF transients...often they can be heard on an AM radio..this can be fixed with tuned RC snubbers across each of the diodes...but this isn't an option as the diodes are inside the alternator.

Anyhow the frequency varies because the AC frequency varies with the engine speed as the alternator is belt driven and therefore the sign changes as a function of engine speed...therefore the number of diode recoveries per second will be 2x the the sign changes per second.

Anyhow you need better cable grouding...location location location. If this doesn't work a 2nd order low pass can be made from an inductor and capacitor placed at the input of the amplifier...you need to find out if it's getting in thru the amp power supply...or is it getting in via the RCA cables. There can also be an inductive component to this as well...if the power cable radiates and it's picked up by the RCA cables...it's all from the same thing basically...just two different paths.

Regards,

James R.

Default There you go again proving youself to be a complete idiot...

...an idiot with an IQ that's very likely in the top 2% and a background in engineering. ;-)

BTW - you got those pedals in Germany, right? Who do you know there? Are you planning a trip soon? Wanna do me a favor?

Default Heh the pedals came from Audi Zentrum which as best I can tell is just the dealer or something along

those lines...my buddy said he picked them up at Audi Zentrum...which just means Audi Center IIRC. He paid $260 Euro for all of them 4 pedals. Contrast to 1552 which charges something like 485 for the same set of pedals :-/

I'm not going to Germany any time soon sorry :-( my buddy in Germany no longer works for the company I'm with. We're still friends of course...so I'll go out there to visit him at some point I'm sure, but how soon I do not know.

Default BTW - Unlike Audi IIRC BMW has some very nice pedals which you can just get from the dealer at a ver

y reasonable price.

Default Awww, rats! It's actually not a pedal set that I was interested in...

<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/30293/rats_2.jpg"></center><p>
...I've been playing hell lately trying to get the OEM Titan Shadow interior trim from the M3 to replace my "luxurious" wood trim. The dealers say it's backordered till Christ comes back and they won't even take my $$$ and put me on a list.

It's either that or ACS silver carbon fiber (really looks better than it sounds) trim, but ACS tries to ***** us here in the good 'ol USofA to the tune of $2Gs for the set. I was hoping to sidestep that little rape scene. :-/

Default Hmm I suppose I could ask...but I'd need more details than that

you know you could also try Juan he seems to get pretty good hookups too and he has a way to get it into the country. My buddy carried my pedals in his suitcase and two RS4 grilles (38 bux each hee hee) so there were no customs duties and such. I think if we shipped in your parts you'd be surprised how much it would cost :-(
