Default which engine is more tunable 1.8T vs 2.8? more....

Hi, I am new to this board. For the last few years I have been mostly a honda-acura type of car enthusiast but recently I have become interested in Audi's and BMW's.

I was wondering which engine is easier to tune? I want to make around 250 hp and unfortunately i do not have the cash to buy a new S4. I am looking to perhaps get a '97 or '98 1.8T or a 2.8 for around $19,000 to $23,000 definately with the quattro system.

I have heard about how much a chip and turbo upgrade can do for the 1.8 but I have also heard there is a PES supercharger. Which one get's me a faster car or a car that 0-60's in about 6 to 6.5 secs?
How much will these upgrades cost me?
Sorry for the long post.

Thanks in advance
Sincerly,
Rich

Default For about $500 the 1.8t can get to 60 in 6.5

A chip will take you to about 200hp and 250lb/ft of torque and is very cheap. With an exhaust and chip you should easily be able to get 0-60 times in the 6's, with manual of course.

Default The PES supercharger will give you 280 hp for about $5000 .

Default 1.8T no question

The 1.8T has been heralded as a tuners dream since its introduction in North America. I remember articles in European Car drooling over it before its arrival. There are reliable kits turning out 300hp on the 1.8T for ~$5,000, you can make 220hp-250hp for less money (save some to upgrade suspension and brakes to deal with greater power). The Supercharger is pretty much it for the 2.8, and unlike the 1.8T it's an all or nothing proposition. Whereas the 1.8T can be upgraded in stages if you don't want to drop all the money up front. Quattro and 5 speed manual are requirements. If you go with a '97 make sure it has the oil line shield. The 97's also didn't offer a sport suspension (the package included wheels, tires, seats, & steering wheel), but sounds like you plan on upgrading anyway. Performance-wise, the 1.8T has another advantage...the engine is lighter resulting in a lighter car with better front-rear weight distribution.
Regards,
Rodney

Default Thanks....some more questions tho

Thanks guys. I would just like to say this is a great board. I went to look up some more Audi performance stuff and in less than an hour you guys have already help me out. I apreciate it.

I read the article from european car on the 1.8T and the ECU's. But I was wondering what kind of ECU you guys personally suggest?

Also I went to the APR website. They seem to have a lot of parts avaliable. Would a stage 3 be street legal? I mean 280 to 310 horses is a lot. I live in GA but emmisions standards are getting stricter every year. Would this be a better choice compared to the 230 HP offering from neuspeed for a daily driver?

I will definately be getting the manual. I currently have a 3.2 TL with the auto-manual and the tranny was fun to play with for about a year but it got boring. Plus I always wanted to learn how to drive a manual.

Thanks again.

Default Everyone has their favorite chip

I went with MTM because of their relationship with Audi, and Hoppen's reputation and experience. If you want to go to 300hp, I would say APR is the way to go. Yes, stage III, and I believe stage III+ are street legal. I've ridden in a Stage III A4 here in NC and it passed emmisisions. As they are located in GA I'm sure you won't have a problem. Just ask them, their very good about responding to questions. Also, if you haven't already, start digging through the archives, there's more information in there than you can shake an ecu at.
Regards,
Rodney

Default Flavor of the day...currently, APR and GIAC seem to be the most popular.

Default I've had it for 8 months

and 8,400 miles. No problems and no pinging, did some runs with a VAG equipped laptop hooked up and even under heavy load on a hot (90+ deg) day no pinging whatsoever. Which is exactly what I expected, but it's always nice to be sure, especially considering how destructive pinging can be. Performance is much like stock when I'm just cruising around, but a stab of the accelerator will launch it forward (can break the wheels free on a 1-2 shift). Power is better than stock everywhere, but the meat of its power is between 2500rpm and 5500rpm.
Regards,
Rodney
