Engine noise - grinding?

Heard some funny noises comng from the engine today... and hoping someone MIGHT have an idea of what it is.
When I heard the noise, pooped the hood to try and figure out what the problem was. Nothing specific to be found...
basically - the engine sounded a little "rough". Intermittent noises coming from the manifold.
But here's the oddest thing of all: noise is there on startup, but if I turn the key backwards (towards the off position), just a fraction - the noise goes away.
I realize this probably won't help anyone figure out what the problem is - but is there anything I should look/listen for that might help figure out what the problem is?
To clarify - it's a 1997 1.8 WITHOUT a turbo.
Thanks,
Cush
