I have recently aquired a 30v 2.8 engine and am thinking of swapping it with the 12v in my '96 A4 2.8q.. How possible is this? I need to know any info on the computer etc... as well. What would need to be done to pull this off?
'96 A4 2.8qm

Default Why did you buy the whole engine?

You realize they use the same block and you could have just put the 30v head on your stock engine, right?
Cameron
Default Yeah, but...

do u think the previous owner would really want to sell only part of an engine? How often in is that someone needs only the block?
just my $.02
-andrewt

Default Re: Why did you buy the whole engine?

The engine came from a totaled A4... it has lower miles than my current engine by far... mine has 62k on it, the new engine has 19k... big difference
anyway.. what would need to be changed? would the computer and everything behave with the new parts or would I need some reprogramming?

Default I looked into this as well....(sort of long)

There was a 30v being auctioned at Ebay 4-5 months ago for $1500, and i was curious s to whatI would have to do to get it running in my 96 12v. I called Autobahn Performance in MA, and they told me it was another $2000-3000 to get it all up and runnung. This is the Response I got from the owner of the engine:

Josh,

It *SHOULD* bolt right in. The way I obtained it was to swap a blown 92 v6 into this car before the car was crushed (the car was severely damaged, with the roof crushed down before the car was ever sold. The car was crushed to qualify for a write off without the headaches of scrap value, thats also why the motor has such low mileage). I obviously didnt full complete bolting everything together as it was only going to be scrapped, but the 92 motor dropped right into the space from the 99, and 92-97 are the same block.

The main thing you would have to work on would be the engine controls (computer and such). Those *ARE* different from a 96 to a 99, and you would definatly need someone familair with the technical side of the wiring and the fuel injection to adapt and hook that up. I do have the ECM for the 99 car, but dont have the wiring harness. I also dont have all the black plastic stuff surrounding the engine, I put it all around the 92 motor so it wouldnt be as obvious in case anyone checked, otherwise the engine is complete from top to bottom.

Basically to answer your question: Yes, it would fit in without too much trouble, but making it run might be harder, and would definatly require someone familair with the Audis fuel injection.
