but it's coming from the hood, somewhere near the windshield edge. Try it yourself. Lift the hood, and tap around there. You'll hear some kind of rattling sound. I've tried taping down the washer hoses, and I can still hear it. It almost sounds like there is something loose in between the two plates in the hood...

I can't say that I have that little problem, my engine starts just fine in the morning w/o any metal tapping. It's a little rough when cold, but once it warms up the engine smoothes out more.
Very strange, I'll pay more attention tomorrow morning when I leave.

...can easily sound like a mechanical tap. Went through that on an '83 GTi. I thought there was a bad lifter, but it turned out to be the exhaust manifold gasket. Reason for change in tone would be the expansion of the metals when hot. THis would somewhat or completely close the opening as the temp increases. Also, the manifold could just have a loose bolt or two, or it could be cracked. My only other guess would be a lifter, but it would probably quiet down completely after warmup, and probably wouldn't be noisy every time you start the car. Also, a lifter wouldn't become more noisy under loud; atleast not to the extent that you describe. Hope they figure it out and fix it soon! :-)
