Default enormous jolt from 1st->2nd

question, i have a 97 a4 and when i try to accelerate fast and shift from 1st into 2nd (around 6000+ rpms) the car gives a HUGE jolt (like something is going to break - the complete opposite of smooth) and throws me forward pretty hard... the rest of the gears it is noticible but not near as bad as 1st->2nd.

is this something i am doing wrong?

or is it a mechanical problem?

any help would be greatly appreciated

if it's an automatic, check the tranny fluid levels and top off as necessary.

Default Depends...

Manual:
You're lifting off the throttle before actually releasing the clutch, and engine braking kicks in before you've released the clutch causing you to get thrown forward a bit. The clutch might not be releasing properly, or it's your driving technique.

Automatic:
Something is wrong. You should have bought a manual.
