Erratic gas gauge B5 help!

Erratic gas gauge B5 help!
Hello:
My gas gauge on my 1998 A4 tq is erratic - Only 60,000 miles but when i fill it up it shows 3/4 of a tank, then over the next day goes up to full, but over time drops to about half, then in no time shows empty, all within a couple days. And I'm barely driving it.
Do I need to replace the float unit, or clean some contacts in there somewhere?
