I just ordered a new 1.8TQMSC with ESP due mid May. Dealer says he can get me the same car without ESP by April 1. Is ESP worth the wait. By the way, my current ride's a bike. I've read the archives, but still not sure.

Personally, if it were six months back, I would have said "I can do without the electronic safety net", but given the good reviews people have published in this years snow storms, I would now hold out the extra 2 months and get it.

I guess I have many reasons to get it, and no reasons not to. My expirence with systems like it has been very good.
A friend has a C5 Corvette with "Active Handling", same idea as ESP (different implementation).
His C4 was hard to drive in the rain and a total joke in the snow.
The C5 is a rock stable in the rain and controllable in the snow. He said he could not induce a spin (doughnut) in 3" of fresh snow with the ESP on. Floor the car during a turn..nothing. With it off just a sharp steering input on throttle would send the car spinning.
On a gravel covered corner I got on the gas a bit hard, the light flickered on, the car just stayed the course and went. I've never activated the ESP on an A4/S4, tho I did get the rear end loose on a non-ESP A4 (dry pavement).
He no longer has two cars, had a C4 and a Jimmy. He runs the S5 with EMT M+S tires in the winter and drives it year round (and why not, it's just a Chevy!). FWIW it's the first car he has not traded in after two years.
Another friend with a 325Xi (AWD E46) makes the same claims and loves his DSC in the snow.

I ordered my new car with ESP and he recommended I pass on that option. His position was that Quattro makes it unneccecary and maybe even a little dangerous as it robs the engine of power during a slip which could cause you to panic.
Now was he just saying that so I'd take a car already on the lot? It's quite possible. The fact that the system can be turned off sort of takes away from the risk either way... so I'd say get it. I opted to take a winter driving course instead... I'd prefer to rely on myself rather then the sensors
