extended warranty

extended warranty
Is an extended warranty worth it, or does it depend on circumstances? Does a warranty by a company other than Audi provide for warranty repairs at Audi dealers?
I have 15k on my A4 after almost 3 years. The dealer offered a warranty up to 50k miles or 5 years for $1500. [the length of the warranty and mileage were geared to how much mileage I put on and my plan to sell the car in about 5 years].
Thanks for any insight.

Warranty is an insurance policy
Pure and simple. Their job is to get your money and keep it. Yours is to try to recoupe it. They make money on these things. Who do you suppose pays?
The nice thing about insurance is you know your expenses up front.
Bad thing is having to fight for reimbursement or coverage. Read the proposal carefully. There are often lots of restricytions and exclusions, usually a deductable, sometimes limits of expense.
Personally - I wouldnt touch an extended warranty. In fact I wish I could simply sell back the Audi warranty and deal with the car myself.

Extended warranties are just expensive insurance. It is just a commodity to the dealer...
Roll the dice. You are betting $1500 that your car will have a major failure during the next three years. The underwriter is betting that it won't. The dealer wins in both cases. He takes his commission off the top and the underwriter pays for any repairs.
It's a sucker bet for you since you only drive 5K per year. The kind of failures you are likely to experience (dead batteries and such) might not even be covered.

be VERY careful about the escape clauses... especially with non-Audi company
there are so many of them out there. I cancelled my policy with 1sourceautowarraty.com after I found out that they have these clauses. You have to wonder how they can offer "bumper to bumper" warranty. I say save your money and spend it on actual repair. You'll come out ahead, because insurance company is betting on that on average, you won't spend more than what you paid.
