The 2.8 pump is in a totally different location. You need to take the TB off to change it.
The 1.8T (2000 and older) can have the the WP changed independently of the TB. The 2001 1.8T had a new design where the TB drove the WP and was integrated into the block similar to the 2.8.

Well you didn't have to. I have a 99.5 and our engines are practically identical.
The waterpump is on the side. However, the difference is that you would need to remove the PS bracket that pins the pump. How do I know? I did it both ways.

That's because you changed the impeller only. You need to pull that sprocket...
off to get access to the bolt and gain clearance.
If you change the entire pump housing, it comes off from the side and you don't need to remove that sprocket.
