Default Failed APR Stage 3 Turbo - Mini Rant :(

So I had this turbo on the car for less than 30k and one day the car had ZERO boost. So I thought it was because I just installed the Z flow APR FMIC and one of the hoses fell off so I continue driving home. As soon as I get home I heard what sounds like a rattling/clicking sound. I limped home(1/2 mile left) and parked and started looking for the noise and the possible boost leak.

I found no hoses dislodged and the sound seem to be coming from the turbo. I took the turbo inlet pipe off and found that the turbo wheel had extremely bad play, almost to the point that it is almost touching the housing. I didn't take the turbo off to see if the exhaust side was shot, but I hope not.

So there ya have it. Less than 30k on the APR turbo and it failed. I'm not upset at APR because I knew the dual ball bearings were subject to quicker failures. I have been talking to Chris G at APR and he has been pretty helpful with helping me repair/replace my turbo. I found a place in AZ that could possibly repair my turbo and I gave Chris a call for the part number and he will be calling me back with it soon.

Default If there is play in the shaft, most likely the turbo wheel has hit the housing

causing it to eat away at the ends of the wheel.

YOu might want to check, but I dont think your turbo is dual ball bearing but just your standard ball bearing setup.

Default That is the new GT28R

I was thinking more on the lines of their older GT25 since you said you have 30K miles on it.

Default I've heard of a couple of others. The BB turbos are susceptable to damage if the oil pressure drops

too low ... typically when the oil level is allowed to drop too far.

Cool, just never paid attention to it since I was already moving into the 30 and 35 line up.

One downside of GT turbos is the high rebuild cost...oh well :/
