Default Faint shudder accelerating from low RPMs

Lately I have noticed that when I slow down and am coasting at low rpms's and then put my foot back on the gas, the car shudders a bit, almost as if it's going over a bump. There is also more of a lag between hitting the gas and getting a response in terms of speed. Does this sound transmission-related? What could it be? I've never found the throttle on my car to be all that responsive, but now it is much harder to control acceleration and accelerate smoothly and quickly; I sort of have to ride the gas pedal pretty hard and know when to ease off. I have 64,000 miles on the clock and the transmission is automatic.

Thanks for any suggestions.
