Default faint whining sound from engine when throttle depressed

I drove to the movie theater today, watched a two hour movie, and when I got back in my car and drove off I heard this whining sound (sounds sort of like a kazoo I think) while pushing down the throttle. It's unrelated to engine RPM and proportional in pitch to the throttle position. It also seems to spin up and down (i.e. if I hit the throttle hard for a brief moment, the sound comes on (goes up in pitch) and then goes away; takes about 2-3 seconds even if I only go WOT for a fraction of a second).

I've never heard this sound before. I searched the archives and found suggestions relating to the power steering fluid. It's too dark to check right now, though. Has anyone else faced something similar?

I should mention - this also happens when the car is standing still.

Default it's a turbo

Could be the turbo; does this mean it's on its way out? Like I said, I've never heard this sound before.

Also, it makes the sound even when the car is sitting still. My understanding is that the turbo isn't running when the car isn't moving - no airflow(?)

Default around 2-4 months

I got a TT valve and swapped out the original BPV. Since this also happens with the car standing still, doesn't that rule out any turbo-related issues?

Default correct you are

i thought maybe you were someone who didnt know what a turbo sounded like. If it never sounded like this before then its not the normal turbo sound.

Default i find sometimes my turbo sounds more like a whine than a whoosh...dunno y though...

also on occasion (once a month-ish), when i run it up hard in first gear, right as i go to shift i hear this almost whistle sound. it sounds like some screwey BOV or like extra boost or something. only first, only sporaddically. never made the car feel weird. strange, but kinda cool actually. hasn't done it in months though /

Default Well almost correct

there is slight airflow. the turbo is driven by exhaust, and since the engine is running (therefore creating exhaust) the turbo will be spinning but not nearly close to spooling.

At least this is what i learned in my engineering course.
