Default Fan is dying....

'01 1.8TQMS
-----------

Whenever I turn on the AC and the passenger side fan kicks in, it makes a bad whining sound like it's dying (its pretty loud too). When I turn off the AC the noise immediately stops. The fan is still moving so I guess it still works but it's super annoying and certainly doesn't sound normal. Any ideas about what's going on? Thanks everyone

Default Well I guess I don't really know for sure actually --- (edit)

Never heard anything like it before so I guess I don't really know for cetrain... I tried to get my ear as close to where the noise was coming from and I'm pretty sure it was the fan.

(edit) It is definately a sort of whining sound (like if a motor was struggling to turn or something), there aren't any clunks or metallic sounds or anything like that. And the noise is a perfect repeating looping sound, as well, not just random sounds, which makes me think it comes from something that rotates (like the fan).

That might all just read like jibberish but basically I have a strong hunch it's the fan, though there is always room for more suggestions.

Default I had someone with a trained ear listen to it and they thought it was the compressor bearings

Now we BOTH have to look into this further.

my car is going in for timing belt and other assorted things, I'll have the tech take a listen.

Let me know if u uncover anything.

Default Not necessarily the compressor, the accessory fan on mine was squealing like a stuck pig.

Every time I turned on and off the AC / climate control. I just had someone turn it on and off while I listened under the hood.

Replaced the electric fan, noise gone, really easy install, just an expensive part around $125 IIRC.

Default maybe the AC belt is slipping?

carefull sticking your head in there or using the "stethoscope" trick. My brother lost a finger in by getting it caught in the belt. not pretty.
